History
Its name dates to the 16th century when 2 Galeras (which were ships driven by oars) were anchored in Rincón Bay. The Spanish arrived in this area in the 15th century, Samaná at this time was inhabited by indigenous peoples called Ciguayos and Tainos.
People
Currently it is a diverse and international community, thirty-five places or towns that are home to a multicultural population where Spanish, French and English are spoken. On the way to becoming one of the first sustainable destinations in the country.
Certified Sustainable Tourist Destination
With the help of the German Development Cooperation, GIZ, Las Galeras was certified in 2020 as the first Sustainable Tourist Destination responsible for biodiversity.
